John Dow, MD of Bollfilter took part in the Felixstowe Regatta weekend on Red Macaw, a Sigma 38 owned by John & Jackie Edwards. John is a regular member of the crew, having sailed on RM for more than 20 years alongside a crew usually numbering between 6 and 8. For this event there were 6 crew, all seasoned regulars.

The regatta is a local series of races for the RM team which is nice, as this means there are no complicated logistics needed to get the boat to the venue.

“We left the pontoon at Levington Marina at 08:30 on the Saturday morning to get to the start line, which was by Fox’s buoy between Cork Sand and Penyhole Bay, for a start at 10:20.

The Race Officer set a windward/leeward course with the windward mark about 1 mile from the start line to the WSW as the wind was a light 8 to 10 knots. The spreader mark was at right angles to the windward at about 50m away and the leeward mark was about 1 ½ miles away, back past the committee boat – start/finish line.

There was difficulty for the Race Officer getting the windward mark laid as the wind kept backing but after a short delay the racing started with a beat to the windward mark, short reach to the spreader and a spinnaker run downwind to the leeward mark and back through the line.”

There were 3 races Saturday and 2 races Sunday. The fleet was made-up of 4 classes, IRC 1, 2 and 3 and cruisers; a total of 26 boats. Red Macaw finished 10th overall and the crew were able to enjoy some good (and sometimes frustrating) sailing, with brilliant sunshine all day Saturday but gloomy drizzle and cloud on Sunday.
