FouleX Coating for Candle Filter Elements

The build-up of Biofilm on filter elements increases the frequency that the elements need to be removed and manually cleaned. FouleX coating the elements is a proven way to reduce this build up.

In water and water based solutions, a growth known as biofilm forms at the boundary layer between the liquid and solid phase e.g. on the filter media.

This biofilm consists of microorganisms and their secretions, which produce hydrogels in connection with water. These hydrogels are relatively stable and therefore difficult to remove.

The biofilm grows on the filter media until it gets blocked and has to be manually cleaned and disinfected with chemicals. With usual flow velocities, the thickness of the biofilm in filters lies between 10-100µm, so at filtration levels finer than 300µm frequent blocking problems may arise.

Furthermore, biofilm leads to bio-corrosion, which also attacks stainless steels. Biofilm is built up until the flow leads to its erosion. The result is that detached particles of the biofilm are permanently carried along and continue to contaminate the water

Our solution to this problem is FouleX, a special coating applied to the filter candle elements.

What is FouleX?

FouleX is a very thin, silver-containing layer which is permanently bonded by fusion to the stainless steel filter candles available for filters type 6.18, 6.19 & 6.18.2.

Silver has an antiseptic effect and prevents or reduces the formation of biofilm. This effect is also used more and more in other areas like medicine, (wound disinfection) or specialist clothing (prevention of noxious odours).
