She’s been in training since Christmas and is now fit enough to start her harder spring training regime with the warmer weather as summer nears.

The ride will be a tough physical challenge – covering over 85 miles a day – but an emotional one too. The route will take in the major battle sites of Verdun and the Hundred Days Offensive of 1918 as well as the breath taking, historical monuments at Vimy and The Menin Gate giving an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices of soldiers 100 years ago.

The ride will take the format of a coach transfer out to Verdun, the legendary fortress town which the French refused to surrender despite horrendous losses, and a return to Folkestone by bike from Verdun. It will cover fascinating areas which saw action both in 1914 during the Retreat from Mons, the Battle of the Marne, the Chemin des Dames, skirting the eastern fringes of the Somme before crossing the Cambrai battlefields and entering Belgium to stay at Mons, where it all began in 1914 and where it all finished in virtually the same place in 1918. From Mons they’ll ride to Ypres for a fantastic last night including a wreath laying at the Menin Gate, before returning to Folkestone in time for early evening on Saturday 11 August.

Why does ABF The Soldiers’ Charity exist?

The charity gives a lifetime of support to soldiers and veterans from the British Army, and their immediate families, when they are in need. They make grants to individuals through their Regiments and Corps and support a wide range of specialist charities that sustain the British Army ‘family’, both at home and around the world.

Show your support for Janine Harris by sponsoring her and raising money in aid of ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, The British Army’s National Charity, helping soldiers, veterans and their families since 1944.
