For ballast water treatment

Without ballast water, modern freight shipping is inconceivable. Each year, between ten and twelve billion tons of ballast water are transported by ships. However, it presents a considerable ecological problem all over the world. 

Ecological challenge

When ballast water is taken on board in the port of origin to stabilize a ship and discharged in the port of destination, the organisms contained in the water are also brought to new habitats. Bacteria, plankton, viruses, small fish, crabs or jellyfish get into ecological systems which could sustainably change due to the new types. This is why the treatment of ballast water is legally required. 

Regulatory convention and agreements

The two main ballast water regulations for the shipping industry were implemented by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and the United States Coast Guard (USCG). The IMO type approval will be a worldwide requirement. The USCG approval however is already required for all US water.

This is how the filtration works

For the Ballast Water Management System (BWMS) on large ships, there are numerous solutions. To protect these multi-stage systems for the treatment of ballast water, the majority of the systems require automatic prefiltration of the sea water taken on board. Therefore, a fine filter is installed between a coarse separator and the chemical or physical disinfection units. Its  task is to remove animal and vegetable organisms, as well as sediment from the ballast water.

Requirements: Ballastwater filter have to….

  • adhere to the degree of separation required
  • combine the required filter fineness with high volume flows and long operating times,
  • exclude blockages of the filter mesh, despite high pollution of the ballast water
  • withstand the aggressiveness of the sea water,
  • be easy to install, retrofit, operate and maintain,
  • have a low footprint and contribute in keeping the operating costs of the system as low as possible
