Fine filtration for separation of oily water in industry

Separation of oily water in industry

In recent years, and especially in the coming years, sustainable water treatment will play an increasingly important role in industry. The separation of oily water, which is required in metalworking and other processes, is becoming increasingly important due to its potential for a sustainable economy. The efficient separation of oil and water contributes significantly to the reduction of waste and the reuse of resources and supports the transition to a circular economy.

Why is the separation of oily water important?

There are two main reasons why oil and water separation is so important:

How can BOLLFILTER help with the separation of oily water?

BOLLFILTER offers customized filtration solutions based on state-of-the-art ultrafiltration ceramic membrane technology. This technology enables the effective separation of water, oil and particles and maximizes resource utilization. Our systems help companies to make their processes more sustainable and reduce operating costs.

An example: Treatment of Alluminium mill water

The Treatment of Aluminium mill water:

  • An emulsion media to mill smoothly
  • Contamination of particles by abrasion
  • High waste of water and oil (for emulsion)

The Ultrafiltration handling:

  • An emulsion media by separating oil from water
  • Particles which are greater than membrane cut-off
  • The recovery of water (filtrate) and emulsion (concentrate)

The separation process of oily water with BOLLFILTER

The process water produced in industrial processes such as aluminum processing contains high concentrations of oil and particles that need to be removed efficiently. The separation process consists of three main steps:

Step 1: Pre-treatment (DAF and coagulation)

  • The raw water is pre-treated in a flotation process (DAF) to remove larger particles and some of the oil.
  • Additional density based pre-treatment by coagulant.

Step 2: Ultrafiltration with BOLLFILTER

  • Sophisticated ceramic membranes separate oil, particles and water.
  • The filtered water (permeate) can be recycled, while the oil is collected in an emulsion tank.

Step 3: Purification and recovery

  • The concentrate is purified and treated. At the same time, the process enables the recovery of resources such as water and chemicals.

Advantages of using the BOLLFILTER FineFilterUnit

Customer benefits:

  • Cost savings: Reusable water and recovered emulsions significantly reduce operating costs.
  • High process stability: The systems work continuously and automatically, which increases operational reliability.
  • Low maintenance: Thanks to the long-lasting membranes and the chemical-free filtration process, fewer interventions are required.

Sustainability benefits:

  • Increased resource efficiency: less waste and optimized reuse support the circular economy.
  • Reduced environmental impact: The use of chemical-free systems minimizes ecological damage.
  • Contribution to CO2 reduction: By saving water and chemicals, BOLLFILTER supports the EU's climate targets.

With the separation of oily water, BOLLFILTER offers an innovative solution that is both ecologically and economically efficient. Our systems enable the sustainable use of resources and contribute to decarbonization and environmental relief.
