Ceramic plate membranes

Ceramic plate membrane modules are used to treat water and waste water streams of moderate solid and oil concents, e.g. oily wastewater and surface water. SiC plate membranes are packed in racks that are stackable (max. 15 units). It has similar material properties like the SiC Tubular Membrane including high durability, chemical stability and high flux.

The ceramic membrane plates are enclosed within a durable housing. The flash-sheet membranes are operated in a dead-end outside-in filtration mode. During filtration the membrane stacks are submerged in the process water. By applying a suction pressure from the indside of the flash-sheet membrane water flows through the pores while suspended particles and impurities are retained on the surface. This design ensures efficient separation of solids and liquids  consuming only a small amount of electric energy.

How do plate membranes work?

While tubular membranes utilize a Crossflow-Filtration principle solution, plate membranes operate based on the Dead-End-Filtration principle. By applying a suction pressure from the inside of the flat-sheet membrane water flows through the pores forming the clean permeate while suspended particles and impurities are retained on the surface As there is no tangential flow across the membrane surface, particles which cannot pass the membrane will accumulate within the liquid solid boundary layer. This filter cake buildup is managed by different processes including air sparging and back washing of the membranes.
