Coalescer filter for the Oil & Gas industry

In the oil and gas industry, liquid/gas coalescer filters are commonly employed to separate liquids from gases. These filters are used with seal gas, fuel gas, heating and cooling gas, injection gas, and numerous technical gases. The coalescence element from BOLL & KIRCH consists of two layers, which fulfil different tasks. The first layer separates solids that may still be in the gas stream. In the second layer, liquid droplets are separated into a special tissue by coalescing the droplets.

Function of the coalescer

The small liquid droplets contained in the gas bond together on the fleece to form larger droplets (coalescence = compound). Gravity causes the droplets to flow down to the fleece fabric as soon as they have reached a certain size. The separated liquid can be collected and, if necessary, stored in a liquid container. Level measuring systems, magnetic level indicators or sight glasses (optional accessory) can be used to check the level.

Design of coalescing filter

In order to ensure an optimal filter design (be it the simplex coalescer or the duplex coalescer), various factors are taken into account:

  • separation efficiency
  • differential pressure
  • quantity of solid and liquid particles to be expected
  • gas components

as well as:

  • volumetric flow rate
  • pressure
  • temperature

The individual components’ state in the gas play a major role when designing the filter and selecting the appropriate separation mechanisms. Coalescing filters are generally used as a fine separator for droplets (concentrations normally in the ppm range).
